uk indefinite leave to remain application fee, 2025
at whitechapel gallery
uk indefinite leave to remain application fee (2025) takes the form of a live, colour-coded google spreadsheet — tracking two months of zero-hours gigs (barista, art auction assistant, artist studio assistant, event production assistant, visiting tutor) taken on to cover the cost of chen's application. the spreadsheet functions as both ledger and diary, mixing figures and hours with diary entries and reflections as it updates in real time, alongside a short animated film charting the document as it shapeshifts over the four-month period.
running alongside the spreadsheet is a tiktok account presenting cctv-style time-lapse clips of chen at work, and a youtube channel of low-effort spreadsheet-based animations — platforms chen treats as "self-imposed cctv," folding surveillance and entertainment into a single documentary medium.
a google map pins each workplace and commute across london, forming a kind of digital psychogeography of the job search. on 23 october, chen hired a temporary worker for three hours to solicit donations from visitors on the artist's behalf, folding fundraising into the performance as a live, scripted act, supported by an ongoing gofundme campaign.
the work was presented at whitechapel gallery as part of the east london art prize take over, curated by sandra lam.
