the spout and its churn rate 2024

at olympia, london

the spout and its churn rate is a site-responsive sculpture commissioned by olympia, london, reinterpreting chen's ongoing vessel series for the shelving structure of the off the shelf pavilion designed by rio kobayashi. the work takes its premise from feng shui and the belief that a moving body of water brings good fortune to a space: each vessel, hand-formed in aluminium and notched to sit flush against a shelf's edge, catches water poured from above and releases it in a cascade down to the vessel below.

the installation was activated through a one-day live takeover of the pavilion, staged as a collaboration between three artists — an-ting, cynthia, and chen — who choreographed, composed, and experimented with the cascade installation over the course of the performance, working with the subtle, unpredictable movement of water as it passed between vessels.
