● live performance at the v&#38;amp;a museum

commissioned by the v&#38;amp;a, i have been working closely with 4 artists of different disciplines on a live performance that will take place on the 13th of september at 18.30 and 20.00‘regarding the retractability of boundaries 關乎邊界及其可伸縮範圍’ is a contemporary dance performance featuring a labyrinth of retractable barriers. with musician and composer an-ting, dancer and choreographer duo yun-chi mai and eloy cojal examine the tension between boundaries. clothing designed and knitted by sophie wang. 
the performance responds to the eponymous installation that will be on view 14th september - 13th october.

it has been an honour to be awarded a two-year work/live studio residency at acme fire station 2023 - 2025.&#38;nbsp;

acme work/live studios aim to provide an artist with well designed, safe, practical workspace and auxiliary living space for a stable, low rent. Artists are selected through application and allocated a studio for a five year term, and rent remains fixed for the duration of their occupation.

hqi is a non-profit institution designed to fill an artist development void in london created by excessively high costs of living and failure of industry to provide supportive networks for its creatives.

the spout and its churn rate(2022)
the spout and its churn rate is a performance piece based on a set of six milk churns of the same volume. through the intensive act of repetitively pouring 1.5 litre of milk from one churn to another, the artist visualises the inevitable loss during the ongoing process of transferal. 


the realisation of the equal volume of each churn, despite their variety of form, offers a tantalising satisfaction, yet ultimately this hoped-for notion that the milk will perfectly flow from each to the next cannot be realised.

informed by an economic term churn rate - the rate at which customers stop doing business with an entity, the title sheds light on involuntary disengagement of all sorts in everyday scenarios, revealing the poignancy of sacrificing a small part of us in order to carry on living. &#38;nbsp;

founded by marseilled-based oros and london-based ii (initial initiatives), local ware is an experimental yet utilitarian project celebrating the diversity of natural resources and lifestyles in different parts of the world.&#38;nbsp;in each edition, the project collaborates with a group of international designers of various backgrounds to develop a collection of ‘local ware’ employing materials local to the creator. 2021 autumn, oros and ii unveiled the first edition of local ware in marseille, exploring the most primitive human behaviour - food making. local ware: cooking edition studies the history of cooking tools in different cultures and how they can be creatively applied to mediterranean cuisine. four designers: chialing chang, guillaume bloget, liang-jung chen and rio kobayashi, were invited to try their hand at creating exploratory cookware pieces.&#38;nbsp;

eight installations were created at the end of the residency based on my observation and investigation of Boisbuchet's surroundings. each of them is supporting eggs in a precarious manner that unsettles the spectators.founded in 1986, domaine de boisbuchet is an international research centre for design and architecture. the campus is surrounded by 150 hectares of protected nature in southwest france and comprises an architectural park of historic and contemporary buildings. the workshops, exhibitions, and events as well as a design collection and library serve professional guests and visitors from the neighboring and global community alike.

most of the egg racks in the series were designed during my 14 day quarantine in a random hotel room in tainan in november 2020. solitude. i just didn’t know what to do with myself. my insecurities just sat there in the corner of the room with me and seeked my attention. i couldn’t escape from myself, eventually, i picked up poetry again for the first time in many years. i looked forward to something genuine and subtle, a new medium to explore my emotions.&#38;nbsp; 
the outcome turned out to be a rather passive, yet aggressive self-disclosure. a series of egg racks that make it clear that they are hypersensitive. they replicate the awkward moments in social events. they offer a glimpse into tragic scenarios. they solicit tenderness. they predict broken hearts.&#38;nbsp; i investigated the most precarious ways to hold eggs. both physical and visual tensions were created, teasing the audiences’ habit of putting eggs in a safe place. three ubiquitous materials - metal, acrylic, and timber - were employed in minimal forms and structures, transforming the daily behaviour of egg keeping into a series of abstract, performing sculptures.&#38;nbsp; 
during the exhibition at gallery&#38;nbsp; error22 in december 2020,&#38;nbsp; a sheet of paper was posted at the entrance of the gallery: “disclaimer: welcome to the exhibition of egg racks. upon entering the space, you are invited to interact with the egg racks at your own risk. the designer has made every attempt to ensure the security of the eggs exhibited in the space. however, each visitor will be held&#38;nbsp; accountable for breaking the eggs and will be responsible for all accidents and damages incurred as a consequence.” stating that it would be the visitors’ responsibility to purchase and replace eggs should they break any, and that they would&#38;nbsp; also be required to clean the venue up after themselves.&#38;nbsp; 
i didn’t really have an expectation in advance about the visitors’ responses. when the exhibition closed on 31st of december, the last day of 2020, the record showed that only around 20 eggs were broken by the visitors.

the misused is a study on global hardware culture initiated by two industrial designers. each year, the project observes hardwares in different country. the designers will first deconstruct the original functions of the hardware and to repurpose them. following the first study on taiwanese hardwares in 2018, the project went on to study dutch hardwares in 2019.

◦ 陰晴圓缺之於自負盈虧&#38;nbsp;ebb is to flow as wax is to wane, 2023&#38;nbsp;

ebb is to flow as wax is to wane&#38;nbsp;is an in-situ beeswax installation created by liang-jung chen during her two months residency in xenia creative retreat. the installation is an exploration on labour-intensity and its futility inspired by chen’s personal experience working in cleaning and her obsession over candles. 
about half a year ago, i was helping a friend with her air bnb business. every day, i would come into the flat to return the rooms to what they looked like yesterday. it takes about 2 hours daily. day after day, my time is gone yet everything stays the same. the effort evaporates into the dustless air in this well-maintained domestic space. 
i came to realise - modern life is a smooth and spotless surface. we spend a chunk of time throughout our lives wiping this surface of modernity. ‘maintenance’ as an intangible service is in great demand nowadays.

trained as an industrial designer, i have spent the past decade of my life making new and physical works. it is a primitive instinct possibly. that i would like to leave some marks behind me to prove that i have existed. the experience of working as a cleaner is humbling as i started to appreciate the value in the invisible and the ephemeral . 

while i was untangling all these random thoughts laying around in my flat one night, i was, as usual, toying with the pillar candle on the side table. i have this compulsory tendency to play with candles. it is not exactly pyromaniac, as what fascinates me is not the fire but the wax. i love bringing those wax pieces that solidified while trickling down onto the tabletop back to the top of the candle so it could be burnt and disappear. i find it satisfying. 
that moment, i discovered this subtle quality shared by the labour in maintenance and wax in candles. both of them evaporate into the air over time in an irreversible manner. the labour we put into maintenance offers us a sense of comfort while burning the candle renders a cosy atmosphere. both pleasures are time-sensitive. 

as a material nerd, i started to experiment with wax. i was intrigued by how malleable wax is. it’s as fluid as water when it’s hot. it’s as soft as clay when it’s warm. it’s as hard as a rock when it’s chunky. it's as brittle as glass when it’s thin. and then, when you make it into a candle, it disappears into the air, leaving no traces. 
to further investigate the correlation between wax and the state of modern labour. i came across a book called liquid modernity written by zygmunt bauman, a polish sociologist and philosopher. liquid modernity is based on the idea that a person can shift from one social position to another in a fluid manner. here are some excerpts from the book: &#38;nbsp;

‘fluids neither fix space nor bind time. in a sense, solids cancel time; for liquids, on the contrary, it is mostly time that matters. when describing solids, one may ignore time altogether; in describing fluids, to leave time out of account would be a grievous mistake. the melting of solids is the permanent feature of modernity.’ 
even though the concepts we are exploring are different, the way bauman associated liquidity with modernity mesmerised me deeply. it prompted me to use wax in a flowy, fluid and spontaneous way. when i first arrived in xenia, i ordered some beeswax pellets and started to trickle the wax down to a long cotton string hanging from the ceiling. 
every day, i would drip some candle strips in the morning and let them slowly solidify in the afternoon. when the sun goes down in the evening, i would light the candle and observe how they behave and how long they last. i go to bed when the candles are completely burnt and nothing is left. when the sun rises again the next day, i will make new candles with a slightly refined method, then i see them burn down again in the evening. this routine is almost identical to when i was cleaning the air bnb room, my labour evaporated into the air. nothing is left. day after day. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 

the naming, ebb is to flow as wax is to wane, takes the advantage of the several meanings ‘wax’ has. when the moon ‘waxes’, it gradually appears rounder each day. while the idiom ‘wax and wane’ means to grow stronger and then weaker again. the idiom happens to capture the versatile nature of wax as a material so well. it also responds to the state of labour in a poignant manner, the fact that our energy level decreases as we age.
